Although Jay Brantley is no stranger to Hollywood and the world of entertainment, it was a real honor for him to be asked to play in ‘Sweetwater’, the biographical film on the life and career of Nat ‘Sweetwater’ Clifton. Clifton, a Globetrotter legend was the first black man to play in the NBA. Jay will be playing one of Nat’s Harlem teammates either Carl Helem or Marques Haynes. Henry Simmons of NYPD Blue and Shark fame will play Sweetwater and Romeo will be playing the ‘young’ Sweetwater.
Jay ‘Boogie’ Brantley, was originally asked to be the basketball consultant on Martin Guigui’s new film, ‘Sweetwater’, but after seeing Jay’s handles it was apparent that Jay would play in front of the camera. Jay, the founder of the L.A. Hooptainers and many local LA pro and amateur basketball associations will be joined by fellow Hooptainer, Malik who will be playing Reece 'Goose' Tatum, the inventor of the Hook Shot. Along with Jay, Malik, and TV star Henry Simmons will be Richard Dreyfus playing Abe Saperstein, founder and coach of the Globetrotters.
The movie will chronicle the life and times of Nat Clifton, the Globetrotters and Nat’s transition from ‘streetball’ to the Knicks some sixty years ago. Clifton and fellow African American ball players broke down the barriers and opened a game for the masses and brought it a special flare. Jay calls this the ‘Boogie’ and I have to agree.
The film is in its early stages at the moment but will be shooting on the courts at West 4th Street, NYC this summer so be sure to keep an eye out. Writer/Director Guigui hopes to have it in the theaters by next year’s All-Star break.
Jay and the Hooptainers will also be tuned into the NBA Draft this summer as a couple of their own may be hitting the big time. This year USC's Nick Young who is expected to go in the 18th position first round and Jontai Vinson who may go undrafted will be on their minds. Last year Craig Smith went to the Timberwolves and Jay is working with his younger brother KG Smith as he readies himself for a big time career in basketball.
